Telos Launches Trusted Setup Ceremony for Privacy Layer
In a significant development, Telos has officially commenced the Trusted Setup Ceremony for its Privacy Layer, marking a pivotal moment for the network and the broader landscape of privacy-focused blockchain technology. This ceremony involves a cryptographic process that is essential for enabling private, multi-asset accounts and shielded transactions on the Telos network. It is structured to ensure that no individual, organization, or developer, including Telos itself, can undermine the privacy protections of the system. Upon completion, the parameters established will serve as the foundation for the zero-knowledge (ZK) circuits that facilitate private transfers, delegated deposits, and secure interactions throughout the Telos ecosystem.
Building on Industry-Leading Security
Telos is leveraging the advanced security framework established by the Ethereum Perpetual Powers of Tau ceremony, renowned for being one of the most scrutinized and community-driven multi-party computation (MPC) ceremonies to date, involving 86 independent contributors. This foundational setup has already gained trust within established ZK privacy ecosystems like Railgun. Under the rules of MPC, the security of the final output can be assured as long as one honest participant contributes, providing the Telos Privacy Layer with a robust security baseline. The ceremony will further enhance this security through contributions from trusted members of the Telos community, including engineers, researchers, and independent privacy advocates.
Understanding the Ceremony’s Process
The Trusted Setup Ceremony follows a meticulous and sequential methodology: each participant executes a computation and incorporates their unique entropy. The output generated by one participant serves as the input for the subsequent participant. As each new contribution is added, the overall security of the final parameters is bolstered. This structure guarantees that no single entity can reconstruct or exploit the parameters, either now or in the future.
Two-Phase Structure of the Ceremony
The ceremony for the Telos Privacy Layer is divided into two key phases:
Phase 1: Powers of Tau
In this phase, Telos enhances the security of the previous Ethereum ceremony by incorporating additional contributors from its ecosystem.
Phase 2: Circuit Parameter Generation
Here, participants will introduce entropy into the ZK circuits that will facilitate private accounts, shielded transfers, and delegated deposits on the Telos Privacy Layer. Completion of both phases is necessary before generating the final verification keys and activating the privacy system on the mainnet.
Participation and Requirements
Contributions have already begun from trusted members of the Telos Foundation and Protofire. Telos is also extending an invitation to reliable and technically proficient participants, including active block producers and long-standing community members, as well as researchers and privacy advocates. Interested contributors should have access to:
- A Linux machine with a minimum of 8 CPU cores
- At least 8 GB of RAM
- 150 GB of available storage for ceremony data
- A clean, isolated environment devoid of unnecessary background software
- The capability to adhere to basic operational security protocols
Researchers, engineers, privacy advocates, or security-oriented community members wishing to participate can reach out via Telegram or email at contact@telos.net.
Future Plans Following the Ceremony
Upon the successful conclusion of the Trusted Setup Ceremony, Telos intends to implement:
- Private multi-asset accounts featuring quantum-hardened security
- Shielded value transfers
- High-performance, Layer 1-integrated private computation
- An exceptional privacy wallet experience
Together, these features aim to position Telos as a leading and innovative network in the blockchain industry, tailored for widespread adoption, developer engagement, and long-term security. The ceremony is currently in progress, and Telos expresses gratitude to all contributors who are playing a role in securing the future of private cryptocurrency on the network.
